FMS NJHS Dismissal and Resignation Criteria and Process
Introduction
When a member of NJHS falls below the standards by which the member was selected, a standard procedure is followed in which the errant member is notified of the nature of the violation, given a period of time for improvement, and provided with a warning of the possible consequences of non-improvement.
Members must understand fully that they are subject to dismissal if they do not maintain the standards of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship, and character that were used as a basis for their selection. A student who is dismissed or who resigns from NJHS is never again eligible for membership in NJHS.
Dismissal Criteria and Process
1. The following process will occur before a student is dismissed:
a. Written notification
b. Conference with chapter advisor
c. Pre-dismissal hearing conducted by the Faculty Council
Note: In the case of flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, a warning will not be given; however, a pre-dismissal hearing will be conducted.
2. Members who fall below the standards of membership will be warned in writing by the chapter advisor. The letter will contain the following:
a. Specific violation
b. Period of time allowed for improvement, if appropriate
c. Warning of the possible consequences of non-improvement
3. The notification letter will be given to both the student and the parents/guardians of the student.
4. A conference between the chapter advisor, the student, and the student’s parents/guardians will take place prior to the hearing before the Faculty Council. At the conference, the contents of the letter will be discussed. The member and the member’s parents/guardians will be notified that failure to correct the violation may result in dismissal from NJHS.
5. If a pre-dismissal hearing before the Faculty Council is to be scheduled, the member will be notified of the date and time of the hearing. The member will be allowed to explain the situation to the Faculty Council. The member’s parents/guardians may be present at the hearing, but it is the member who must present his/her case to the Faculty Council.
6. If a member is dismissed, written notice of the decision will be sent to the member, his parents/guardians, and the GCS Principal. The member must then surrender the NJHS membership card, shirt, and pin. Failure to do so will be treated as a school disciplinary matter.
7. The dismissed member may appeal the decision of the Faculty Council according to GCS policy.
8. In the case of a flagrant violation of school rules or civil laws, a warning will not be issued, but a hearing will still be held.
9. The following are violations for which a letter of warning will be issued. It should be expected that once the letter of warning is issued, a conference with the chapter advisor will be scheduled. Unless it is noted that a period of time will be given in which to correct the violation, it should also be expected that a pre-dismissal hearing will be scheduled.
a. GPA below 3.5. Students will be given a warning at the end of the quarter when their cumulative grade point average falls below 3.5. The student will be given until the end of the next quarter to raise their GPA to 3.5 or higher.
b. One unexcused absence from a meeting per year. An unexcused absence is defined as an absence in which the advisor was not notified of the reason before the meeting. If a member is absent from school on the day of the meeting and that absence is excused, the member’s absence from NJHS will also be excused. Members are expected to arrive on time. Three tardies will result in an unexcused absence.
c. One unexcused absence from an activity per year. An unexcused absence is defined as an absence in which the advisor was not notified of the reason before the meeting. If a member is absent from school on the day of the meeting and that absence is excused, the member’s absence from NJHS will also be excused.
d. One detention per quarter.
e. Any violation of behavioral rules as outlined in the GCS Student Handbook.
10. The following are violations for which a letter of warning will not be issued, and a pre-dismissal hearing will be conducted as soon as possible after the violation occurs.
a. Suspension from school.
b. Expulsion from school.
11. If a member fails to participate in the dismissal process, the hearings will be conducted in his/her absence, and the matter will be resolved.
Resignation
Those students who resign from NJHS are never again eligible for membership or its benefits. a. Resignation should involve submission of a written statement by the resigning member that is dated and signed by both the member and his/her parents/guardians. b. Verbal resignations are insufficient to end membership. Note that resignation from NJHS does not automatically exclude a student from membership in National Honor Society (NHS) in high school. Membership in NJHS is not a factor in selection to National Honor Society. NJHS is considered to be a sister group of the NHS. While NJHS and NHS are administered by the same office, NJHS is a separate and independent organization.
